Rohit Vemula, The Modern Ekalavya

Rohit,

There’s so much to your name;

But so much more to your karma.

In Hindi your name says the color red;

That’s the very color of earth bed,

From which you came,

To the same was your retreat.

They reviled you “inferior birth”;

But feared, for they knew your worth.

In Sanskrit, you’re the first ray of sun;

Bright and vibrant, delight to anyone.

You filled our hearts with rays of hope,

The one with wisdom, always atop.

Marathi, you’re the flamingo bird;

From blazing fire, came that word.

By every means you lived your name;

A boon indeed, that everyone aim.

For brahmanics, you were Ekalavya,

Who excelled than their superior Arjuna’s.

Dronacharya took his thumb as dakshina,

They went ahead, and took your pranah.

~ Here’s my tribute to Rohit Vemula, the 2nd year PhD scholar of University of Hyderabad, yet another victim of the Bhrahmanic politicians of India. He was a dalit, who became the prey of BJP-ABVP politicians for his works to bring Dalits and Muslims together to act against the casteism. He was expelled from hostel on false allegations and were striking at the campus with some fellow dalit students.  Click here to read more. He hanged himself in a hostel room, leaving a note

    I didn’t know about this and it’s sad now to know… May God bless his intentions. I’m sure many got inspired by him. Hopefully they will carry on his legacy.
    The world is harshest with the softest people. But the imprints of those people lasts longer in our hearts.
    I used to study the Indian history since I used to be in a CBSE based school until grade 8, but they always spoke about how the caste system was not valid anymore and how equal every one was in India, and of course the news said something entirely else…
    Pata hai, I really think that our textbooks need to be real… Too many people grow up thinking that India is diverse and has equality when I don’t think it really does.
    I used to study the kuwaiti social studies as well and it used to make me just as mad. No one like to address the real political or social problems that are tearing the state apart. All they do is brain wash us into thinking that the place we live in is perfect. They present the picture of an ideal state in our books so that we never stand up for the rights of different people.
    But if we see no flaws in the society we live in, how will we ever be able to fix it?
    I wish people would build their generations in a way where they welcomed these debates and actually addressed these problems instead of claiming that our country is tolerant already. Tolerance comes from listening to people calmly. Not from telling them to shut up.
    In kuwait, there’s no caste system, but it’s the gulf. The 21st century slavery works different ways over here. No one likes to address the problems and injustices that expats go through. It’s awful…
    May Allah guide our slumbering humanity… 😦

      Aameen..You’re so right! Until his death, not many people knew about his struggles. Now, altleast some have started thinking. Also, it’s high time to change our textbooks with all those lies. Even I learned the same. No casteism, no untouchability. But its still there. And everyone needs to be aware of that!! Not some utopian depiction of India! Today, saw a new that the Hyderabad university CMO( Chief Medical Officer) who’s also a dalit, said he also had similar experiences in the university. That the management ignores him and not even let him do his work. So, now people are speaking up.
      And about tolerance, you might’ve seen how even those Bollywood actors were treated when they commented on intolerance!(their lives got saved because they’re famous ppl) And dadri incident too! I’ve only heard about the gulf issues. There was this book called “Goat Days” which depicts the other part of Arab countries. It’s actually a translation, I read the original one which is in malayalam. May Allah save the oppressed all around the world…

    Damn. Didn’t know this! Glad to now know of this hero. India and Pakistan, we are estranged siblings and there are so many things we can solve if we work together. Praying for the beauty of these countries to be restored, insha’Allah. We need to become activists for his sake, his cause, our cause.

    Came across your blog from HP portal. The way you analysed his name and linked it to the guy was amazing. This was a sad news. How the evil exterminates the ones who try to exterminate evil and all we can do is to watch helplessly.
