The Ant Story

A tiny black ant in the sugar, I found strolling by

That daddy just brought from the shop nearby.

Mom took a tin and poured in the sugar,

I waited as the ant came out like a skilled digger.

Scared he seemed, as faster he strolled;

Up, to the lid then back down he patrolled.

“Poor thing, he’s trapped” I heard someone muse;

“Or a naughty little kid, as to explore was he chose,

Like that little lamb, from the story mom once told

Who went out all alone, by a wolf he got fooled.”

“An ant in a tin of sugar, what else would he need?

Lucky him!” I mused, “As lifetime he can feed.”

“Nah, you got it wrong, kid” I heard mumma say;

“Freedom is more worthy, how hungry you may stay.

If I lock you in a room full of chocolates of your choice,

Will you stay in there whole your life and rejoice?”

“Never! Mumma, how I’ll sleep not by your side?

Whom will I hug, when those bad dreams stride? 😭😭

Poor little ant must be missing mumma too!

Now I know mumma, taught the best way you!”

I took him from the tin and put into a box,

Ran to the shop and left him with his folks.

~Well, I know this one turned out to be crappy, 😂😂 but I wrote this considering myself as a kid of 3-5 years old. Tonight, I was on my usual patrol to kitchen for some snack (self) service (when you’re preparing for an exam, you feel more hungry than usual). Just then, dad came in with sugar. Mom told me to put it in a tin, but I was already busy watching the ant in the packet. Mom did it herself and closed the lid with ant in it. Well, she din see the ant at all. This much is real, and the rest I totally made up. Nah, I din go to shop with the ant to take him back to his family. I got that from a story about a Sufi called Shaikh Abu Bakr Shibli, when saw an ant in the sack of grains he bought, he went back to the shop, saying separating any living thing from its habitat is wrong. But yeah, I rescued him out of the tin.

Well, the featured image, i was so lazy to search for a good pic, so I drew one. 😀 ~

    This was such a good poem! Even if you wrote from the perspective of a three year old.
    Freedom is better than any other treasure.

        I agree.
        We never realize it’s worth until it’s gone.
